We had Friday off, so after getting organised and a quick visit to the tackle shop to get a day ticket and some maggots, we found ourselves on the towpath of The Kennet and Avon canal about 10-30 in the morning, and Claudia had some how managed to buy yet another rod ( a beachcaster of all things!).
We had planned a gentle day, I was concentrating on float fishing, something I had promised myself to do more of this year, and Claudia was trying out her birthday present from her daughter, a 5 metre elasticated whip ( the fishing variety before you get too excited).
I was set up on 4 lb mainline and an 18 hook on 1.5lb hooklink, I had some red maggots and a few small floats, I soon found that is was catching small roach and rudd with some skimmers and the odd silver bream, I had a perch too but nothing of great note. We moved to a second swim when the bites dried up a bit and in this second swim I was soon into more of the same, I did get one cracking take, the line shot off and I wondered what I was into, and I knew I was on light gear, so I played this gently, whilst trying to get my net out of the rod bag and click it into position. I was nearly there when Claudia shouts across, "Barge coming!", bugger! with a lunge of the net I landed this to a round of applause from the ladies on the barge
A cracking bream, did not weigh it but the disgorger in shot is 6 1/4 inches (16 cm) long.
I fished on until 7pm and had some more nice bream, I hit a shoal of them and must of had 30 or so from my last swim. It was a nice gentle day in pleasant weather with enough fish biting to make it fun.
Claudia was just as successful, She had a similar range of species
Here are some of her pictures
the shots of the swims
A roach
A nice silver bream.
She did manage one species I did not
A ruffe, of course.
Not a bad size, 5 inches exactly when measured.
