| Subject: Pike season, what are the recommendations Sun Jul 13, 2008 11:02 am | |
| I have some difficulty understanding "pike season", the stretch of canal I use says no pike fishing in the summer, the syndicate lake I am in allows dead baiting in the summer, but no spinning or wobbled dead baits, and the stretch of river I was on today allows spinning and dead baiting all year.
Why is it so different in different places??
does anyone know what PAC recommend?
I also wonder why the rules exist, I was lead to believe that spinning can run a pike out of oxygen in the warm water so is banned, but surely a good dead bait take can be just as tiring as a spinner take.
Common you pikers, let an old duffer like me know the whys and wherefores of pike season please | |

| I don't know all answers to your questions mike, but the reason we do not spin in the summer, is just in case anyone latches onto a carp. in the summer months they are at their most active, and this could damage the fish. Another is that most carp anglers would be cross with trebbles ect snagging their lines plus the disturbance to carp anglers is another. | |

| in brief the pike season was brought in as far as i am aware because the pike fight themselves to the point of exhaustion in the summer and subsequently put themselves at risk, the traditional pike season ( october to march ) is still recognised on many waters but some owners relax them a bit, i for one stick to the season,it doesnt seem right to catch a pike when the weather isnt cold !!! | |

| Bit like you Paul, i Prefer it cold as Pike are a lot more active when the food fish slow down. If i had my way the pike season would stick at October to march. Lots of commercials relax this as a means to get more bankside, which means more revenue. There are no set rules only rules set by the venue owners themselves, Pike are a bit more lethargic during summer, but i don't think they tire anymore in warm water any different than cold, i have had many summer pike simply because, they've taken my carp bait on the retreive, i haven't found any difference in there performance apart from being a bit slower, and they've recovered ok. As for spinners in summer, i'd ban it in summer simply because so many other large species, that spend a lot of the colder months on the bottom and semi dormant, are up in the water when it's warmer, thus likely candidates for being foul hooked. | |
